Winter is coming, no seriously, it’s coming and if you’re a homeowner in Austin you have to be prepared for the cold weather because it’s not uncommon to have 80-degree temps during one week and then freezing temperatures the next week.

Thankfully, you can get your home ready for winter now by following these simple tips.

#1 – Get Your Pipes Prepared for Winter

If you moved from the East Coast you may be very familiar with winterizing your home's pipes and you still have to do the same thing in Austin

To winterize your pipes, you will need to do the following by mid-October at the latest:

  • Shut off all outside water.
  • Drain water from sprinkler lines and hoses.
  • Wrap socks or cardboard around faucets to protect them.
  • Fix leaky pipes NOW because it could cost up to $3000 or more to fix a pipe if it breaks during the winter.

#2 – Inspect Your Home for Critter Entry Points

Since your home will be warmer during the winter than the outside temperature it’s also possible that critters may find your house inviting as well.

To avoid having a “critter Airbnb” you should look for all entry points to your home and seal them off to avoid having mice, squirrels and other critters making their way into the walls of your home to stay warm during the winter months.
