Pokémon Go – How Is It Affecting Real Estate?

What is Pokémon Go? It’s the latest mobile app game that’s been taking the world by storm in recent weeks since this free-to-play game uses your device to make Pokémon appear as if they are in the real world.

To play Pokémon Go all you need is a fairly recent mobile phone with a camera and GPS then you can find Pokémon all over Austin and the world.

There’s no denying that this game is a HUGE hit especially with Millennials who may have collected Pokémon cards in the 90’s but how has it affected local real estate?

Augmented Reality

The most interesting thing about Pokémon Go is that this game is the first real example of augmented reality, or combining a virtual character with the real world, so if you ever dreamed of collecting real Pokémon when you were a kid this is probably the closest that you’re going to come to getting your hands on a real Pokémon.

What’s even more interesting than the augmented reality aspect of Pokémon Go is that savvy Realtors® are now using elements of the game when marketing their listings or rental properties.

For example: many Realtors® in Austin and across the United States are including how many PokéStops or Pokémon Go gyms are within walking distance of their listing while some agents are using Pokémon characters in ads for their listings.

Connecting With Buyers

Love it or hate it, Pokémon Go is a great way for Realtors® to connect with buyers and although many agents still are not up to speed with Pokémon Go, or mobile gaming as a whole, this trend isn’t going away any time soon and it’s likely that we will see many more augmented reality games in the future especially as a growing number of adults rely on games that they have on their phones to relieve stress and take a break when needed.
